Retrocalcaneal Spur / Haglund’s Deformity Surgery Consent
The heel bone (calcaneus) sometimes has a structure that over time develops into a bump on the back/rear section of this bone. This bump can create a spur or in severe cases inflammation and damage to the achilles tendon.
The Procedure
This surgery to correct this deformity involves removal of the bump and prominent portion of the heel bone. This is done by making an incision on the side of the achilles tendon. The tendon is then detached at the farthest point, and reflected to expose the bone. The bone is then resected with the saw, smoothed out and prepared for the reattachment of the tendon.
The achilles tendon is then reattached with a tendon anchor system. The skin is repaired and the foot is placed in a splint.
This procedure requires that you keep your foot non-weight bearing for the first 4 weeks. This means that you must wear your Post Op Boot at all times and keep the foot non-weight bearing. This is done by using a knee scooter. Protecting the foot from trauma during the recovery process is critical since the tendon attachment can become dislocated/torn.
