Preparation Before Surgery

Pre Op Checklist

  • Make sure your primary MD has completed your pre op history and physical. We need to receive this 48 hours before your scheduled surgery.

  • Make sure to complete your surgical consent. This document is sent via email for your review and electronic signature. Take time to read and understand the form, and ask questions before surgery day.

  • Please do not eat or drink anything after midnight. If you need to take medications on surgery day, you can take them with a small sip of water. Our anesthesia provider will contact you before surgery to review what medications you should and should not take the day of surgery.

  • During your shower on the morning of your scheduled surgery, please clean your feet well and scrub between the toes with soap and water. Make sure to remove any debris or lint build up between your toes.

  • Please remove nail polish if possible and keep your nails natural.

What to Wear

  • Please wear loose fitting clothing. A simple plain cotton t-shirt, and loose fitting sweat pants, or shorts are great. You will not be required to change out of your clothes since our surgical prep site if only from the ankle and below.

  • Do not wear socks that leave lint, and wear easy to remove shoes that are clean.

  • Leave all valuables at home. Please do not wear any jewelry.

Arrival Information

  • Please arrive on time for your procedure. Do not arrive early as our facility is designed to accommodate

one patient at a time. We will be ready to open for you at your scheduled time.

  • There are rare instances however where we need more time to complete procedures with attention to detail and quality. If your surgery is scheduled to follow an earlier case, we will notify you well in advance that you should arrive later than the scheduled time.

  • Remember that our facility design does not allow for guests to wait in the lounge while we are in surgery. If you have someone bringing you to surgery, we encourage them to stay close by and in the Beverly Hills area as we will contact them when we finish the procedure with a 20 minute advance notice to return to the office and pick you up.

Things to do after surgery

  • Go directly home and if possible, elevate your feet on the way. Reduce your activity to remain off your feet for prolonged periods of time for the next 72 hours, getting up only as necessary.

  • Elevate your feet level with the hips by supporting your feet and legs with pillows. *Toe lengthening & reconstruction patients DO NOT elevate.

  • Alternate use of ice packs around the foot (20 min. ON, 20 min. OFF) for 4 hours after arriving home. Make sure the ice pack does not leak by wrapping it in a towel. *Toe lengthening & reconstruction patients DO NOT ice.

  • Keep your dressings dry. Use the shower cover to keep your bandages dry. Avoid areas of where your foot can get soaked like pools, jacuzzis, beaches, sunbathing.

  • Take your medications (if any) as directed.

  • You should get plenty of rest with the feet elevated, drink plenty of fluids, and eat a regular well balanced diet.

  • In some cases, the skin may take on a bruised appearance. This is no cause for alarm.

  • Wear your post-op shoe AT ALL TIMES. Walk with the non-surgical foot leading method. Use crutches or walker if your procedure requires it. *The post-op shoe is supposed to be bigger than your foot.

  • Exercise your legs occasionally by bending your knees gently to stimulate circulation..

  • If you have discomfort, take your pain medication before it becomes intolerable.

  • Visit the Support page and watch the videos.
